There is no right or wrong way to do self hypnosis to stop smoking. However, it works. I know because I did it.
Smoking, as you are no doubt aware, is a terrible habit and addiction and the reason it seems so hard to break is that it is lodged deep in the subconscious mind.
The conscious mind is the part of you that thinks you should get a new job, wonders if you’ll catch the train or enjoys a good TV show. Your unconscious mind, however, is concerned with things that you don’t necessarily think about, like breathing, using muscles in your legs to walk or feels fear in certain situations.
The subconscious part of your mind is the older, more primordial part – concerned with the basics of survival and living that beings on this planet have relied on for millennia. Pretty important stuff. Unfortunately, this is the part that is telling you to keep smoking.
Hypnosis works by suggesting to your subconscious self that you don’t need cigarettes. Rather than pay someone to hypnotize you it’s much better to learn how to do it yourself – this way you can tell your subconscious mind to do anything at all!
How to hypnotize yourself to stop smoking
First of all you need to prepare yourself and your environment. You need a quiet place and time where distractions are at a minimum.
Make sure you are feeling as relaxed as possible.
Place a chair with a back but without arms in the middle of a room with no electric lights on and no sunlight streaming through the windows. Make sure you turn off any electrical appliances that may be making a noise or disturbing you.
Now sit down on the chair, close your eyes, cup your hands together on your lap, relax and be aware of the sensations in your body.
Feel the weight of your body against the chair. Notice the sensations on the soles of your feet where they are touching the floor.
Try to clear your mind. We spend all our time worrying about the state of our bodies but incredibly little time working on our mind and yet it has to be one of the most important organs!
You will find that these moments of silence, far from being boring, are actually very relaxing and enjoyable.
Now, turn your attention to your breathing. Breathing is constant and concentrating on it is the best way to empty your mind and only be aware of the present moment and nothing else.
So, feel the sensation of the air going in and out of your nostrils and count the breaths from one to ten and then back again to one.
At first you won’t be able to concentrate on the breaths for more than a few seconds other thoughts will flit into your mind. But, with practice your mind will calm down.
There is much more to write on this subject and if you sign up for email updates here you will receive an e-book on how to stop smoking cigarettes that will explain this in greater detail.
Once you reach a very relaxed state where you mind is completely concentrated on your breathing you should start the auto-suggestion. This is planting thought into your mind, just by thinking while you are in this super-relaxed state.
This process is particularly good for giving up smoking as you are concentrating on breathing. So, deliberately think of the clean, perfect air going into your body, replenishing it and giving oxygen in order for you to function. And, then exhaling so as to get rid of the waste products, the carbon dioxide, away from you.
This appreciation of clean air may be enough to make you want to continue your life without smoking another cigarette.
